League vs Stowmarket Town Wasps 1st April 2012 Match Report
On this bright and sunny Sunday afternoon the Hornets travelled to the very familiar Wasps Nest to face our other Stow Town team.
In the earlier league game the Wasps had given the Hornets a scare and it was only a late wonder strike from Harvey that secured 3 points.
In the early minutes the Hornets looked a little nervey and the Wasps harried and chased every ball.
A long ball up field was allowed to bounce over the Hornets defence, but the Wasp's attacker failed to capitalise.
Halfway through the half the deadlock was broken when Smithy robbed a Wasps defender and jinked into the box before his shot just beat the keeper.
Wasps 0-1 Hornets
The Wasps continued to put pressure on the Hornets, giving them very little time on the ball to get their usual passing game going.
Despite this the Hornets lead was doubled before half time when Smithy again won back the ball outside the Wasps box. He cut inside and slotted his shot passed the keeper for his second goal of the game.
Wasps 0-2 Hornets
Smithy was again involved in good attacking play from the Hornets when his surging run down the left ended in a cross. On this occassion noone was on the end of it.
Half-time: Wasps 0-2 Hornets
The Wasps came out after half time buzzing and caught the Hornets still in their nest, after only 14 seconds the Wasps had scored. A high ball over the defence was worked into the box where Oliver Prowse was on hand to score.
Wasps 1-2 Hornets
This finally woke the Hornets up and they now got into their stride. Good passing play led to a corner on the left. Harvey,s whipped in corner was met by Smithy at the near post! This completed Smithy's hatrick and topped a 'man of the match' display and was a real goal from the training ground!
Wasps 1-3 Hornets
Another good run from Smithy ended with a great ball across the goal which Simon almost got on the end of- so close to getting his first goal!
The Hornets extended their lead further when another brilliant Harvey corner was met by Elliott at the far post, he guided the ball into the empty net- again straight from the training ground!
Wasps 1-4 Hornets
Goal number 5 followed when a superb cross from George, wide on the right, was met at the far post by Harvey to score.
Wasps 1-5 Hornets
There was still time for the hard working Wasps to pull another goal back, once again a bouncing ball forward was not dealt with by the Hornets. A goal mouth scramble followed before Kyle Osborne scored from close range.
Wasps 2-5 Hornets (Final Score)
I am sure this was a great game of football for the spectators to watch and a great spectacle of the improvement made by both teams during the season. Good luck to the Wasps in their remaining games this season.
