League vs Stow Falcons Blues 15th April 2012 Match Report

On what started out as a bright but breezy Sunday, then cloudy and wet with Hail stones, the Hornets visited Stowupland to face the Blues.
Although the Blues were currently 13th in the league and yet to win, the Hornets would still need to be at their best to come away with all three points.

With George away and Simon not well (get well soon!) the Hornets started with Club Captain Owen and top scorer Harvey on the bench.

It was the Blues who looked brightest at the start, forcing Dan into an early save on the break.
Once the Hornets started to get the ball down they created chances of their own.
Numerous excellent corners from Aaron flew across the box with the Hornets attackers statuesque- this may be a hot topic at training Thursday!

Hard work from Connor and Smithy in midfield, with good link up play from Elliott, then Harvey kept the Hornets pushing for the opening goal.
This finally came when good play from Smithy, then a great pass from Connor found Aaron free on the right. He wriggled round the defender and his cross/come shot was deflected in off a Blues defender- I am sure the defender wont mind Aaron claiming it as his goal as it was heading in.
Blues 0-1 Hornets

The first half was far from plain sailing for the Hornets, the Blues battled well and played some great football of their own. Great defending from Huggy and Josh, along with a couple of great saves from Dan kept the score at 1-0 going into the break.
Half-time- Blues 0-1 Hornets

Soon after the break the Hornets doubled their lead when Harvey picked up the ball just inside the Blues half. He skipped passed the defender, ran into the box and finished confidently.
Blues 0-2 Hornets.

The Hornets then seemed to think they had the game won, even though there was still over 18 minutes left. They appeared to take their foot off the pedal, allowing the Blues more time and space on the ball.
The Blues took full advantage of this and they deservedly got a goal back when a ball into the Hornets box was not cleared. The attacker finished well into the far corner.
Blues 1-2 Hornets

This gave the Blues a real boost and not long after they won a corner on the left. The well taken corner eluded the Hornets defenders, who were once again rooted to the spot. A Blues attacker at the far post unmarked scored a brilliant volley high into the far corner, giving Dan no chance.
Blues 2-2 Hornets

This finally woke the Hornets from their nest, now they were finally buzzing!
Harvey played a great ball through to Aaron, he controlled well and used his pace to speed past the last defender. He then slotted his shot past the keeper.
Blues 2-3 Hornets

Now the Hornets were starting to play the great passing football their fans are used to. Their 2 goal lead was re-established when Elliott and Aaron combined. 'Man of the Match' Aaron's perfect cross was met at the far post by Harvey, his header was then bundled over the line by Elliott.
Blues 2-4 Hornets

Soon after a fizzing drive from Owen flew just over the bar from the left wing.
The Hornets did get their 5th when Elliott latched onto a loose ball just outside the box. He fired his shot into the bottom corner.
Blues 2-5 Hornets

Not long after Harvey's rifled shot flew back from the foot of the post, some of the crowd thought this had gone in and out again, but the ref was in a good position to decide it hadn't.

Number 6 soon followed when Harvey picked up the ball on the left, he took the ball past the defender and ran into the box. His shot was almost saved by the keeper before rolling over the line.
Blues 2-6 Hornets

Just before the end Connor picked up the ball just inside his own half, he flew past one defender, beat the next in the tackle. He then sped into the box before unleashing a thunderous drive just inside the near post from a very acute angle. This was possibly the best goal of the game, certainly the best Connor has scored and well deserved after a hard working display.
Blues 2-7 Hornets (Final Score).

This was a good display from the Hornets against a much improved Blues team who will soon get their first win if they continue to play like that next season.
